This engagement session was extra special for one simple reason — it took place on the property where this couple is building their future home.

We started in the open field where their house will eventually sit, and ended the evening across the street on his family’s land, capturing some laid-back, natural photos at dusk in his truck. The entire session felt personal, relaxed, and full of meaning.

This is exactly why I always encourage couples to think beyond “pretty locations” and consider places that actually matter to them.

Why Meaningful Locations Make the Best Engagement Photos

One of the most common questions I get as a Columbus engagement photographer is:

“Where should we take our engagement photos?”

My answer is almost always:
Somewhere that feels like you.

While parks, downtown areas, and scenic spots are great, the most powerful engagement photos usually happen in locations that carry real emotional value — like:

  • Where you met
  • Where you got engaged
  • A family property
  • Your favorite weekend spot
  • Or, in this case, where you’re building your life together

These places tell your story without needing to explain anything.

From Golden Hour to Dusk: Letting the Session Unfold Naturally

For this session, we planned around the light and the meaning of the location.

We started during golden hour in the field, keeping things simple and relaxed. As the sun went down, we moved across the road and leaned into a more casual, in-the-moment vibe — sitting in the truck, laughing, talking, and just letting things unfold.

Those dusk photos ended up being some of their favorites.

Not because they were posed perfectly.
But because they felt real.

How I Help Clients Choose the Right Engagement Location

I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all engagement sessions.

Every couple is different, and every session should reflect that.

When you book with me, we talk through:

  • Your personalities
  • Your story
  • Your comfort level
  • The overall vibe you want (romantic, playful, relaxed, adventurous, etc.)

From there, I help guide you toward locations that make sense for your relationship — whether that’s a scenic park, downtown Columbus, your family farm, or the land where you’ll build your home.

Engagement Photos That Feel Like You

The goal isn’t just to create “nice photos.”

It’s to create images that still feel meaningful 10, 20, even 50 years from now.

Photos that remind you:

  • Where you started
  • What mattered to you
  • What this season of life felt like

That’s what makes engagement sessions truly special.
