Mini Session Prep Guide: What to Know Before You Arrive

Mini sessions are quick, fun, and perfect for families who just want a few updated photos without the time of a full session. But because they move fast, there are a few things you should know to get the most out of your time.

Here’s your guide to what to expect, how to prep, and answers to the most common questions I get about mini sessions.

First Things First: What Is a Mini Session?

A mini session is not just a shorter full session. It’s more structured, more traditional, and moves quickly—usually 15 to 20 minutes long. Think of it as a snippet of a full family session.

There’s less time for warming up or wandering off (as cute as that can be during a full session!). Minis are ideal for families who are ready to jump in and go.

Who Are Minis Great For?

✔️ Families who want a quick and easy session
✔️ Clients wanting updated family portraits
✔️ People who love a more traditional look with everyone smiling at the camera
✔️ Anyone who doesn’t need a big storytelling session, just a few solid keepsakes

Who Might Want to Book a Full Session Instead?

❌ Kids who are shy or take a while to warm up
❌ Families who love lots of candids, movement, or storytelling-style images
❌ Extended families

If you’re looking for something more customized or slower-paced, a full session is 100% the better option—and totally worth it.

No In- Depth Questionnaire?

Correct! For mini sessions, I’ll gather everything I need from your time slot sign-up form. Because these are shorter and more structured, there’s no need for a full questionnaire like I send out with regular sessions.

A Quick Note About Time

Please arrive on time (or a few minutes early!). This one’s important.

I wish I could bend the rules here (and the mom in me totally gets it when things go sideways), but if you’re late, it does eat into your session time. I want to give everyone their full experience, and it’s not fair to the families after you if we run behind.

Being on time = getting the most out of your photos!

What to Wear

Neutrals are always a favorite of mine (creams, whites, soft taupes—they photograph beautifully), but I’m also all in for a pop of color! Don’t be afraid to mix in textures or subtle patterns.

Some quick tips:

  • Coordinate, don’t match
  • Layers add dimension
  • Avoid logos or graphics
  • Consider where you’ll display the images (your home decor colors can help guide you!)

I’ll include a few of my favorite color palettes at the bottom of this post to inspire you!

What You’ll Get

Even though the session is short, you can expect at least 15 edited images, often more. These will be delivered via an online gallery with printing rights included, so you can print and share to your heart’s content.

FAQs

Q: What if it rains?
A: I’ll keep an eye on the weather and communicate with you. If we need to reschedule due to weather, you’ll be the first to know.

Q: Can I bring grandparents or extended family?
A: Mini sessions are not designed for extended family groupings. Please book a full session for that kind of coverage.

Q: Can we get some candids too?
A: I’ll absolutely try to sneak in a few natural moments, but keep in mind mini sessions are more traditional in nature and meant for quick portraits.

Q: Will you help us with posing?
A: 100% yes. I’ll guide you the whole time, so no worries there.
